Over the Sea to Skye

Sing me a song of a lad that is gone,
Say, could that lad be I?
Merry of soul he sailed on a day
Over the sea to Skye.

Robert Louis Stevenson

Every person in the world who has an interest in Scotland, is very likely to know this song. Especially since it starred as the signature song for the series Outlander (Affiliate Link).

Behind the popluar poems, songs, books and tv shows, there is a very real tale of Scottish History. Flora McDonald was the woman who carried Bonnie Prince Charly ‚over the sea to Skye‘, dressed as an Irish maid named Betty Burke. From Skye he was able to escape to Europe. Which means that til this day, Flora McDonald is a Jacobite heroine. The song was published 4 years after her death, carrying her fame.

In her honour a memorial was erected on Skye’s Kilmuir Cemetery, where even to this day, people come to visit the grave and lay down flowers. Kilmuir Cemetery is also a burial ground for other famous Scottish men and women. It is located directly on the A855 from Uig to Staffin, a little ways beyond the Skye Museum of Island Life.

Since I very much love the way the clouds look on this picture, I am entering this into the wonderful Leanne Cole’s Photo Challenge ‚Clouds 2‘. Take a look!
